2.2.2 Pause, stop and hide (A)

If background audio starts automatically, it must be possible to pause it, stop it, or control the volume. Ensure that people can turn off any sound that plays automatically for more than three seconds.

How to test

  1. Make sure you have audio enabled and not muted.
  2. Open the web page to be tested. Listen for any audio that starts automatically, including audio on a video. Check that it switches off within 3 seconds or there is an identifiable mechanism in the content to switch it off or pause it or control its volume.

Potential access issues

  • The sound does not turn off automatically within 3 seconds and there is no obvious way on the page to turn the sound off or pause it or control its volume.
